Hartland is a small fishing village at the heart of the Hartland Peninsula situated at the point where the Bristol Channel meets the Atlantic ocean as a result, Hartland has a spectacular rugged coast line, very low light pollution and lovely green pastures. which have meant that it is classified as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and is part of one of the UNESCO Biosphere sites.
Hartland has been set to a number films and TV programmes with classics such as Rebecca being filmed at the Quay, along with Top Gear throwing caravans off the cliff there, House of Dragons filming some of their recent scenes there, Scenes of the Night Manager, Sense & sensibility, the War Zone, Treasure Island, Water, The Phantom Light and Hartland Abbey being the home of Malory Towers. We have also had Whitehouse and Mortimer Gone Fishing and Escape to the Country filmed on our very site.
For a small village we have a lot going on, the big events include the annual Carnival held in August, the Hill Climb if you are like us and into your bikes is a must see, normally the first weekend in April and October and the Mini Run, as well as the monthly farmers market and film club. Lundy Island is also visible from much of the Peninsula with the Heliport based in Hartland.
The 3 pubs host bands, quiz nights, and fundraisers on a regular basis, the British legion, has games afternoons, with its own skittle alley so there is normally something for everyone.
We are blessed with the most spectacular night skies as we have very low light pollution, if you manage to get a clear night when the moon isn’t to full, make sure you don’t forget to look up. The owls normally like to get in on the act serenading you as you stand in awe
Hartland is situated between Bude and Bideford on the Devon / Cornwall border and sits on the costal path between the two. Many people come here and use the bus services to help them use Hartland as a base to walk this part of the costal path
We have a number of lovely towns and villages near us, most notable is the ever popular Clovelly one of the few villages in the country which does not allow cars, where all goods are transported in and out via sled. Beware though the cobbled streets mean sensible shoes are advised and good walking legs as the streets are quite steep. If you do get to the bottom and find that you can’t face the walk back up then there is a landrover that ferries people back to the top for a small fee
Appledore is also a personal favourite, situated across the river Torridge from Instow (a fantastic place to take your dog to the beach or get a lovely seafood dish) this little fishing village with its colourful cottages and numerous quirky shops and pubs is lovely to go for a nice quiet evening. If you fancy something with a bit more nightlife then try Bude with its sea front appeal, Westward Ho with the sea lapping against the sea wall while you dine or Bideford.
